Enrollment begins at new St. Mark’s Orthodox Academy in South Africa

A new Orthodox theological school of the Patriarchate of Alexandria is about to embark upon its first academic year.

As the patriarchate’s website has announced, enrollment is now underway for the newly-opened St. Mark’s Academy of Theological Studies in the Senderwood area of Johannesburg, South Africa. The course of studies will last for three years, taught in English, and enrollment is open to students from around the world.

His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria and All Africa had announced the opening of the new academy in during a recent pastoral visit to the Greek-English Educational Institute “Saheti,” where 1,300 students of all level receive an Orthodox education.

St. Mark’s Academy will offer students from around the world the possibility of studying Orthodoxy by following online lessons through email or social media. Students will be supervised by experienced teachers in the fields of Church History, Dogmatics, Orthodox Spirituality, Liturgics, Christian Ethics, Pastoral Theology, and the Ecumenical Movement, with emphasis on contemporary theology in the African and larger missionary field.

Upon completion of the three-year program and the completion of a Ph.D. dissertation, students will receive an accredited diploma in Orthodox Theology from the Department of Higher and Tertiary Education of the South African Ministry of Education.

The academy’s Program of Orthodox Christian Studies is already available, while the Course in Orthodox Studies will launch in 2019, and the Diploma in Orthodox Studies, Masters in Orthodox Theology, and Doctoral Program in Orthodox Theology are planned for 2020.

There are also short courses available in Jesus Prayer, Logotherapy, Business Ethics, and World Religions.
