miloserdie.ru Yesterday was a glorious day for believers in Chernigov, Ukraine, as two of their great saints were celebrated together.
orthodox.com.ua August 22 marked the 25th anniversary of the glorification of St. Lawrence of Chernigov, and is also the annual celebration of St. Philaret, the Archbishop of Chernigov, reports the site of the Diocese of Chernigov and Novgorod-Seversk.
Schema-Archimandrite Lawrence was numbered among the saints as a venerable monk at the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1993. He is commemorated on December 29/January 11 and January 6/19.
orthodox.com.ua Archbishop Philaret was locally canonized as a holy hierarch in 2009.
orthodox.com.ua The festive service in the Holy Trinity Cathedral was celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Ambrose together with Archbishop Clement of Nizhyn and Priluki and Archbishop Theodosy of Boyarka. Clergy from the Diocese of Chernigov and from abroad also joined in the celebration.
Met. Ambrose delivered a sermon to the large gathering following the reading of the Gospel. A prayer for peace in Ukraine was also offered up during the service.

Schema-Archimandrite Lawrence, in the world Luke Evseevich Proskura, was born in 1868 in the region of Chernigov. He reposed on the feast of Theophany, 1950, and after his death his relics were found to be incorrupt. Besides the gift of healing, St. Lawrence was known for his gift of prophecy, especially concerning events surrounding the end of the world and the coming of Antichrist. His words have striking significance for us today.
