Support has been expressed in the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia for His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in response to the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s recent uncanonical encroachment upon the canonical territory of the UOC.

His Beatitude Archbishop Joachim of Beroun has made several statements on his personal Facebook page in support of Met. Onuphry.

On Sept. 7, Abp. Joachim wrote, “Strengthen in all his trials, O God, the much-suffering and dear bishop, pastor, and our friend His Beatitude Onuphry and all his flock!”

He also offered high praise for Met. Onuphry again yesterday: “Onuphry, the Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine is the best of the living bishops. He is adorned with humility, love, forgiveness, and wisdom. Always in prayer, he is wholly dedicated to God and to service to the people. He brings comfort, hope, and joy everywhere. Throughout many trials, he has always stood like a rock. Knowing him is the greatest spiritual gift for me.”

Earlier today, he also posted the list of synods, primates, and hierarchs expressing their support for Met. Onuphry and the Ukrainian Church provided by Mother Cornelia (Rees) in her recent OrthoChristian.com article “A Canon Aimed at Moscow?” He has also added a picture of His Beatitude Met. Onuphry as his cover photo.

The primate of the Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, His Beatitude Metropolitan Rostislav, also stated his support for the canonical Ukrainian Church in May, calling on Ukrainian politicians to stop interfering in ecclesiastical matters, and noting that any granting of autocephaly must be the a consensual matter: ““A schism, caused by man’s egotism, can be healed only through repentance and returning to the Church,” the primate noted. “The new autocephaly must be the result of a consensus.”
