Images Of Mount Athos Through Contemporary Photographers’ Lenses

The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography (TMP), in collaboration with the Mount Athos Center, present “Mount Athos: lingering between image and photographic gaze” exhibition, as part of the “Words and Images” cycle of the museum.

Beautiful images from Mount Athos, the so-called “Holy mountain” in Chalkidiki, northern Greece, captured by the four contemporary photographers, Valery Bliznyuk from Russia, Ali Borovali from Turkey, Zbigniew Kosc from Poland and Zoran Purger from Serbia, will be on display in Thessaloniki through January 29, 2016, while they will be divided into four different sections (“Place”, “Worship”, “Life” and “Faces”).

MP Director and curator of the “Mount Athos: lingering between image and photographic gaze” exhibition, Vangelis Ioakimidis, commented on the event, saying: “Mount Athos has been, and it is still, a special attraction that, hosting plenty of earthy elements, has the tendency to lean towards the divine. This is the main reason people, and especially the Greeks, consider Mount Athos to be a symbol of great historical, political, cultural and above all religious significance. It is extremely interesting when photographers from abroad are invited to ‘reach’ this special symbol, without having experienced it before.”

“In this case, the four photographers, Valery Bliznyuk, Ali Borovali, Zbigniew Kosc and Zoran Purger, did not participate in a special-purpose mission, but they followed a personal journey approaching Mount Athos experientially. So, their look seems to be more direct, stripped of the multiple dimensions anyone who understands the history and importance of Mount Athos carries out,” Ioakimidis said.

One of the greatest holy icons of the Christian world is the wonderworking icon of the Mother of God “It is Truly Meet” (Axion Estin), located on Mt. Athos. Every year on June 11/14 the monks organise a solemn procession with this holy shrine. We offer our readers a photo report on this event, by photographer Vitaly Kiselov. Forming the basis of the exposition are materials from the photo album Russians in Shanghai, published by VD Zhiganov in that city in 1936. That edition consisted of three hundred copies. This unique encyclopedia of the Russian emigre community in Shanghai in the 1920’s and 1930’s was reprinted by Alfaret Publishers of St Petersburg in 2008.
