President Vladimir Putin met with special honor on Mt. Athos

Vladimir Putin, president of the Russian Federation, was met with special honor on Mt. Athos, reports AgionOros.ru.

The president of Russia was welcome by the protos of the Holy Mountain Elder Paul Lauriat, abbots, and representatives of the Athonite monasteries in the Holy Kinot.

    

In the cathedral church of the Holy Mountain, the Protaton, Vladimir Putin venerated the wonderworking icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Axion Estin,” after which a Moleben was served.

The protos of the Holy Mountain of Athos addressed the Russian president with words of greeting.

    

In response the president of the Russian Federation focused on the tight historical connection of Russia with the Holy Mountain and called pilgrimages to Athos a special blessing.

President Putin was received into the hall of the Holy Kinot. Greek president Prokopis Pavlopoulos participated in the reception.

Metropolitan Apostolos of Miletos (Patriarchate of Constantinople) also greeted the president: “We meet your pilgrimage to this monastic republic with glorification and thanks to God. We receive you not as a stranger, but as family.”

The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) hopes that Greece will not succumb to pressure from a number of European parliamentarians and officials, and will preserve the spiritual tradition and history of Athos's status as a multinational center of the entire Orthodox world.

I am not a religious person, but I know the religious connection of Orthodoxy between Greeks and Russians. The mutual friendship and respect among Russian and Greek people everywhere has even longer roots than that starting with the Greeks being established around the Black See thousands of years ago. Many are still there living in harmony with the Russians or assimilated to a great extend. Through history the understanding and support to each-other has been exceptional. Many Greek dignitaries served in the Russian Court and Governments. The 1821 Greek Freedom Fight of the " Secret Society " had its roots in Russia. Without forgetting that the Cirillic alphabet was introduced by the two Russian monks Cirill and Method from Constantinoupole. Even in 1945 by rights Greece should had been in the Eastern Block. The sympathy and support never ended and the two peoples have similar traditions and similar values over and above those of religion !
