The Bulgarian Orthodox documentary “The Holy Town—Assenovgrad” is now available on YouTube, on the channel of journalist Angel Bonchev, the author and director of the production. The published version of the film includes English subtitles, allowing it to reach a larger audience in English-speaking countries.
The film was created in 2015 with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Nikolai of Plovdiv. “The Holy Town—Assenovgrad” is the first and only one film ever presented in the European Parliament, in Brussels on May 24, 2016.
The production describes the spirituality preserved during the long history of the hometown of its creators: author Angel Bonchev, editor Emilia Marinova, and montage editor Boryana Bukikova-Puncheva. The documentary film includes many Assenovgrad clergy—people who have felt grace and received the help and support of God in the local churches, and Assenovgrad mayor Dr. Emil Karaivanov, who helped realize the film.
The film also features the very special guest His Majesty King Simeon II of Bulgaria who shares his feelings and emotions from when he laid the foundation stone of the town’s Church of the Archangel Michael in 1996, just after he returned to his homeland after a 50-year exile.
The author of “The Holy Town—Assenovgrad,” Angel Bonchev is a 34-year-old journalist, working as a news anchor for the Bulgarian television station Evropa for the past 13 years. Over the past six years he has created some of the best Bulgarian Orthodox documentaries, including “St. Nektarios the Wonderworker and “The Holy Surgeon Luke.” He is also the author of a children’s book dedicated to St. Luke of Simferopol and Crimea, St. Luke the Doctor.
