Fresh off his victory lap around Ukraine with the newly-granted tomos of autocephaly, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko intends to meet with His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem during his current working visit to Israel, reports the official site of the President of Ukraine.
As OrthoChristian has reported, the Patriarch has been under heavy pressure from the Patriarchate of Constantinople and the states of Israel and America to recognize and serve with the new Ukrainian schismatic church created by Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Poroshenko.
Though the former Metropolitan Alexander Drabinko, who voluntarily entered into schism, and other representatives of the schismatic-nationalist church were intending to travel to Jerusalem to serve there on Theophany, they stayed in Kiev and Pat. Theophilos celebrated the feast only with canonical Orthodox brethren. A pilgrimage group from the canonical Ukrainian Church, however, was in Jerusalem for the feast.
No Local Orthodox Church has as yet accepted the Ukrainian schismatics, which puts Poroshenko’s autocephaly project at risk. The President met with His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia in July, though he limited himself to only asking for his support and prayers for peace in Ukraine, not broaching the topic of autocephaly, as the Serbian Church’s strong stance against the Ukrainian schismatics was already clear at that point.
According to the President’s website, Poroshenko will meet with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein, with the intention of signing a Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and Israel.
