On the feast of the Meeting of the Lord, 2024, Sretensky Monastery in Moscow marked its thirtieth anniversary of renewed monastic life. We present this photogallery of special moments and people, from the first days of the monastery’s renewed life in 1994, to the present day.
Much has happened in that period of time. The Church of the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God was restored along with its ancient frescoes, and the monastic buildings were renovated and rebuilt from half-ruins on this small parcel in the center of a bustling megalopolis. Just as miraculously was the Cathedral of the Resurrection and the Holy New Martyrs of Russia built, surrounded by its spacious cathedral square. The monastery has become more than just a quiet corner of paradise in the capital city—it is also the home to the Sretensky Seminary, a Sunday school, and various religious-educational functions. It reaches as far as Ryazan province, where it has a skete and sponsors orphanage, and into the Russian north, where groups of young Orthodox Christians travel every summer to rebuild Russia’s cultural heritage—the amazing 16th-19th century wooden churches.
You can see that Sretensky Monastery, renewed under the watchful eye of Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov; now of Simferopol and Crimea), is more than just a monastic habitation—it is a phenomenon of modern Russian history.
