Work on Warsaw’s Agia Sophia Church continues with the installation of beautiful new iconography in the main dome of the cathedral.
The church, which is modeled on the iconic Agia Sophia Church in Istanbul, has five domes, with the main dome reaching a height of 71 feet.
The stone façade of the western wall was also completed, reports the Basilica News Agency with reference to the Polish Orthodox Church’s official website.
The photos reveal a beautiful fresco of the Lord Jesus Christ surrounded by holy angels. Additionally, 11 icons are being painted at the monastery on Holy Mount Grabarka for the church’s iconostasis.
Additional work on the church bell tower will be carried out in the near future.
The construction of the church was first announced in February 2015, and the foundation stone was laid on December 5, 2015 by Metropolitan Sawa of Warsaw and All Poland and Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. It is the first new Orthodox church to be built in Poland in a century.
The first Liturgy was served in the Agia Sophia Church in May 2018 by hierarchs of the Polish, Ukrainian, Russia, and Constantinople Churches.
