Patriarch Theodoros ignores request of Metropolitan of Limassol, commemorates schismatics in Liturgy (+ VIDEO)

Limassol, Cyprus, November 12, 2019

Romfea Romfea

Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria arrived for a previously arranged visit to Cyprus on Saturday, November 9, the day after he first commemorated Epiphany Dumenko, the primate of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine,” in the Divine Liturgy.

Pat. Theodoros took this step on his own, without a conciliar decision of the hierarchs of the Alexandrian throne. The decision caught many by surprise and was the cause for concern among Cypriot hierarchs, who asked him not to commemorate Epiphany Dumenko while serving in Cyprus.

The request to refrain from commemorating Dumenko came especially from His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, where the Patriarch was scheduled to celebrate the feast of St. John the Merciful, the patron saint of Limassol, where there is a significant Russian population.

However, as video from the Liturgy published by the Orthodox journalist Alexander Voznesensky, who was present at the service, shows, Pat. Theodoros ignored this request and commemorated Epiphany anyways:

When the Patriarch commemorated Epiphany, three bishops in the altar immediately ran over to Met. Athanasios and began to tell him something very actively and emotionally.

After the Patriarch commemorated the schismatic, all the bishops and priests were given an envelope with a picture that read: “Onuphry: Metropolitan, Epiphany: schismatic, Theodoros: Judas.” One of the priests in the Patriarch’s entourage tore up the picture and threw it back at the man handing them out, though several Cypriot priests were grateful that the envelopes had been handed out, saying that they did not support Pat. Theodoros’ decision.

While there had been about 50 priests at Vespers, only about 10 came to serve the Liturgy with the Patriarch, though OrthoChristian has been informed that it is typical in Limassol to limit concelebrating priests at the Liturgy to 10.

It is also known that some bishops, including His Eminence Metropolitan Timothy of Bostra, the Exarch of the Jerusalem Patriarchate in Cyprus, did not attend the Liturgy as planned after learning that Pat. Theodoros had begun to commemorate the schismatics.

Africa Orthodox priests should sit up

As both a cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church, and as an African, I am pained and disgusted by this news. I had, as had all of the faithful upholders of the canons, the Ukranian Orthodox and all those souls for whom the faithful of Ukraine are dear, hoped that Partriarch Theodoros would remain true to his word and to the One, Holy, Universal and Apostolic Church. By acting in support of schismatics, he has cut through the fertile missionary soil which is Africa, and the hearts of all Orthodox, for whom Orthodox unity is crucial. "Do not err, my brethren. If any man follows him that makes a schism in the Church, he shall not inherit the kingdom of God." (Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-Bearer:; Epistle to the Philadelphians)

As someone in the Patriach's jurisdiction, I'm also pained by his move. I was certain that the Church in my country was entering an exciting stage of evangelization and spreading, but this won't happen now if people have to choose sides (and yes, they will).

The offence is truly significant, but was made by the Patriarch alone. I ask brothers and sisters, for the sake of the Church of Alexandria, pray that the Patriarch comes to his senses and repents. The reference to Judas is not appropriate, although equal in betrayal, the Patriarch is still alive and has opportunity to repent. Pray for this with all your hearts. The insults will not achieve much, but your humble prayers will. This not only affects the Patriarch, but the Entire Church of Alexandria and all of Africa. The clergy are not complicit and were not consulted. The lay people are also the Church, and many of us strongly object. Remember, St Kosmas of Aetolia warned us of these days. May the Lord have mercy on us, and grant us the strength and courage for what is about to come.

For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. (Gal. 1:10)

I am guessing that the Alexandrian Judas will not be invited to many more Churches which choose to uphold the canons of the Church.

The devils desire to destroy the Church continues. But in the end, the Church wins! Maybe Judas can move over and make room for him. Gary
