As previously reported, Patriarch Theodoros of Alexandria ignored the request of the local ruling hierarch His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol and commemorated the schismatic Epiphany Dumenko while serving the Divine Liturgy for the feast of St. John the Merciful in Limassol on Saturday, November 9.

The Patriarch had first commemorated the primate of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” the day before in Cairo, although he had previously encouraged the Ukrainian faithful to remain loyal to Christ in the canonical Church under His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine.

Further, as Met. Athanasios revealed in a recent radio broadcast, not only did Patriarch Theodoros commemorate Dumenko against Met. Athanasios’ wishes, but he did so against his own promise not to, according to a statement on the site of the Metropolis of Limassol.

During the broadcast, Met. Athanasios stressed that the bishops of the Patriarchate of Alexandria who were traveling with Pat. Theodoros assured him from the moment they arrived that the Patriarch had promised not to commemorate Epiphany Dumenko. Further, the Patriarch himself did not warn Met. Athanasios during the Liturgy that he intended to commemorate the schismatic.

Various media outlets speculated that the commemoration of Epiphany Dumenko on Cypriot territory indicates that the Cypriot Church will soon recognize the OCU. Thus, Met. Athanasios had to clarify that his stance remains the same and that he continues to recognize only the canonical Ukrainian Church and only Met. Onuphry as the canonical Metropolitan of Kiev.

“Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol differentiates his position on the matter of the Patriarch Theodoros II of Alexandria’s commemoration of the name of Epiphany as bishop of Kiev during the Divine Liturgy in Limassol,” reads the metropolis’ statement.

“He accepts and recognizes his Beatitude Onuphry as the canonical Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine,” the statement concludes.

In an interview in June, Met. Athanasios stated:

I believe that Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev is the canonical primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. I want to ask all Orthodox brothers in Ukraine to be under the omophorion of Metropolitan Onuphry, to support his Church, to remain faithful to the Orthodox faith. I understand that they’re going through great temptations. We are very sorry, and we ask forgiveness that every one of us is to some degree a cause of these temptations, but we pray that the Lord would help them pass through these temptations.

I can also say the following. I’m very impressed, and I very much admire how Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev has handled this crisis: with great calmness, with great dignity, with few words, with few statements, and with many prayers.

The Cypriot Church continues to stand against the anti-canonical actions of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Ukraine, and it does not agree with Archbishop Ieronymos of Athen’s decision to recognize the Ukrainian schismatics, though it also does not agree with the Moscow Patriarchate’s decision to break communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople and with the Greek primate.

My Brethren in Christ:For those who believe the Patriarch of Alexandria is blameless or his actions are inconsequential in commemorating the schismatics would do well to ponder this truism of Orthodoxy by His Grace, Bishop Irenei:“Where secular people may feel they have the option to divorce the spiritual realm from the physical and do one thing with their bodies while believing another in their minds, we Orthodox Christians do not. We know that the actions of our bodies, and the things we do with our lives, affect our hearts and are directly connected to spiritual realms of which we are, on account of our weakness, not always immediately aware.”– His Grace, Bishop Irenei of London and Western Europe Synodal Secretary for Inter-Orthodox Relations Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia

Patriarch theodoros was wrong to begin commemorating the schismatic Dimenko. The tensions between Alexandria and Cyprus serve as further evidence that patriarch bartholomew was wrong to recognize the scismatics thus started the chaotic divisions manifesting themselves. I do not understand how anyone can support recognition of the fake church considering the oppression of the Real Ukrainian church, the divisions in Greece between a hierarchy subservient to phanar against Those bishops, priests, and faithful loyal to the canons, and now tensions between the fallen church Of Alexandria vs Cyprus. This is a horrible situation bound to worsen unless a council is convened to Rule and depose patriarch bartholomew.

Joseph, Perhaps you should do some homework on the Holy Fathers' teachings on schismatics and schism...and the spiritual delusion and deception that is born of it. To suppose Patriarch Theodoros 'would act otherwise' is a fruit of that delusion. It's like asking a pigeon not to act like a pigeon...it's going to crap all over regardless of our not wanting it to....

The Patriarch of Alexandria did as exactly as what was announced to the whole world the day prior. It would have been a deception if the Patriarch had done otherwise. Furthermore, it would be without precedent for a Patriarch presiding at Liturgy to change commemorations merely so as not to offend a local bishop. It sounds like the Bishop of Limassol failed to directly ask the Patriarch about this matter, but instead asked indirectly through the Patriarch's entourage. Perhaps the Patriarch's entourage was being deceptive, but it is wrong to accuse the Patriarch himself of this.
