The most important holy site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra, reopened at 9:00 AM after a period of quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The good news was announced by His Grace Bishop Viktor of Baryshevka, the Ukrainian Church’s representative to European international organizations, on his Telegram channel today soon after the monastery reopened: “By the grace of God, from 9 in the morning today, our main sacred site—the Kiev Caves Lavra—is open. The quarantine regime has been lifted.”

The monastery gates were closed to pilgrims from early April. On Sunday, May 3, His Eminence Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod and Chernobyl, the abbot of the Lavra, noted that there are more than 200 members of the brotherhood, 68 of whom became sick during the time of pandemic, though not all of them suffered from the coronavirus. Three members of the brotherhood, Frs. Nektary, Nikodim, and Naum, reposed in the Lord.
