A large fire broke out yesterday in the mountains of Thermi in eastern Lesvos, about 12 miles north of the city of Mytilene, very close to the Monastery of St. Raphael.

The blaze burned the forest and olive groves in the area of the monastery from about 1:00 PM yesterday, reports Romfea.

The darkness of night forced the four firefighting planes and the helicopter to cease their activity, with the ground crews taking up the battle, trying not to let the fire reach an adjacent inaccessible ravine. Their work is complicated by the high winds blowing in the area.

According to CNN, the fire is not threatening any residential areas.

The monastery, founded in 1964 by Metropolitan Iakovos of Mytilene and Abbess Eugenia (Klidara), is dedicated to the Holy Martyrs Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene. It is built on the site where their relics were found after St. Raphael appeared to numerous pilgrims, revealing the details of his life and martyrdom.

Donations can be made to the monastery by bank transfer or card payments. Details can be found on the monastery’s website.
