Efpalio, Greece, June 15, 2020

The fire was extinguished before midnight, but not before destroying the new Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos housing the ancient wonderworking Varnakova Icon of the Mother of God, reports Vima Orthodoxias.

According to tradition, the icon came from Varna, Bulgaria, hence the name of the monastery.

Rescuers report that only a tiny fragment of the sacred treasure has survived. Thankfully, the nuns were evacuated in a timely manner and no injuries are reported.

The old section of the monastery was previously damaged into a serious fire in January 2017.

In October 2017, OrthoChristian reported about a seriously ill man who was miraculously healed after his wife visited the monastery and prayed to the Mother of God before her icon.
