WATCH: Divine Liturgy celebrated at Panagia Sumela Monastery in Turkey for first time since 2010

On Saturday, August 15, the new calendar feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Panagia Sumela Monastery in Trabzon, Turkey for the first time since 2015.

The monastery finally reopened in late July after 5 years of restoration work, during which no one was allowed to serve in the monastery.

The service was celebrated by Metropolitans Stefanos of Kallioupolis and Madytos, Maximos of Selyvria, and Ioannis of Zambia of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, reports the Metropolis of Zambia.

The Liturgy was filled with reverence and emotion. “With religious fervor, the faithful communed and worshiped at the monument of Pontian Hellenism,” writes the Metropolis.

The procession was held today for the fifth time. It’s a revival of St. Petersburg tradition. This year the cross procession was headed by the ruling hierarch, Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga. In addition to the wonderworking Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, the revered Greek Panagia Soumela Icon of the Mother of God was carried at the head of the procession.

The Patriarchate of Constantinople has published a communiqué addressed to all who have inquired about the Divine Liturgy on August 15, the new calendar day of the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, in the inactive Panagia Sumela Monastery in Trebizond, Turkey, where the patriarch celebrated the feast every year from 2010-2015. Turkish authorities did not allow the traditional celebration to take place in 2016, citing the ongoing reconstruction on the monastery grounds.
