Three parishes of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the capital city of Bucharest raised $4,140 (17,000 lei) for the treatment of Sara Nukina, a teenage girl who is battling a brain tumor. The announcement was made by Fr. Mihai Christian Popescu, the dean overseeing the three parishes, reports the Basilica News Agency.
OrthoChristian reported last week that His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel donated $2,370 (10,000 lei) for the girl’s treatment.
Sara is a 16-year-old Japanese convert to holy Orthodoxy in Romania. She is well known to the audience of the Romanian Patriarchate’s Radio Trinitas for her generosity in helping the elderly and the sick, bringing them great joy with her gift of singing.
Last month, she was diagnosed with an inoperable infiltrative brain stem tumor, requiring the highest-level oncological treatment. “If she has helped so many people as a volunteer, now it is our turn to help Sara,” the Patriarch told Radio Trinitas.
“Sara Nukina has participated in several socio-cultural events organized in the parishes of our deanery,” Fr. Mihai said. “She often sang at Liturgy… We did not necessarily want to make this action public, but we thought it was important to know, because it can encourage others to donate.”
Sara has already undergone an emergency surgery, and will now have to undergo radiotherapy and oncological treatment, for which the family is still raising funds.
The first stage of treatment alone costs more than $59,000 (50,000 euros).
