Abbot of Russian monastery goes missing

A search is underway for the abbot of the St. John the Forerunner Monastery in the village of Borok in the Kostroma Province who has not been seen for several days.

On Friday, April 9, Abbot Andrei (Kozlov) left the territory of the monastery and has not been seen since, reports the Kostroma Province branch of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

Fr. Andrei has been the abbot of the monastery since 2013. The holy habitation was founded by St. Jacob of Zhelezny Borok in the late 14th century, and his relics are kept in the church there. The monastery was closed by the godless regime of the 20th century and reopened in 1994.

Employees of the Investigative Committee, the police, other law enforcement agencies, and volunteers have all joined in the search.

Fr. Andrei was born in 1975. He was ordained to the deaconate in November 1995 and to the priesthood in September 1996.

In 2004, he was accepted into the brotherhood of the St. John the Forerunner Monastery. In 2010, he was elevated to the dignity of igumen, and on July 25, 2013, he became the abbot of the monastery.
