His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania issued a statement yesterday calling for an end to the current military hostilities in the Holy Land.

His statement, published by the Basilica News Agency, reads:

In the worrying context created by the escalation of serious armed violence currently taking place in the Israeli-Palestinian area, military hostilities that have already led to the death of many civilians, including many children, the Romanian Patriarchate prays to God for the cessation of the conflict and the restoration of peace in the Holy Land.

Any prolonged armed conflict, fueled by hatred and resentment, causes much suffering for the innocent and very deep wounds in all registers of social life.

Although they seem very difficult to achieve, peace, dialogue and reconciliation still remain the most just and dignified way to overcome conflicts between individuals and peoples.

We make a strong call for an end to violence and the restoration of inter-ethnic and religious peace in the Holy Land, with the hope of resuming safe visits for all pilgrims wishing to worship in the “City of Peace”—Jerusalem, and throughout the Holy Land. We pray that God will bestow upon policymakers the wisdom of peacemakers and defenders of human life.

His Beatitude Patriarch Theophilos of Jerusalem and the heads of other churches in the Holy Land issued their own statement earlier this month, and His Holiness Patriarch-Catholics Patriarch Ilia of Georgia made a similar call on May 13.
