On Sunday, the feast of the Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council, thousands of Orthodox faithful gathered at Tuman Monastery in eastern Serbia for the revesting of the relics of one of the monastery’s native saints.
The day began with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy by Archimandrite Dimitrije, the abbot of the monastery, and numerous priests. More than 15,000 believers came from near and far for the celebration, and several thousands received Holy Communion, reports the Metropolis of Montenegro.
Following the Liturgy, the relics of St. Zosimus the Wonderworker of Tuman were solemnly revested and carried in procession. St. Zosimus headed a group of monks from Mt. Sinai and Mt. Athos who settled around the monastery in the mid-14th century. He was known for his extreme fasting and praying in a rocky cave until his death. Today, his remains are the monastery’s main relic.
“The essence of life in the Church is our need to unite with God in time for the sake of eternity,” Abbot Dimitrije preached to the people.
“The heavy rain in no way disturbed the gathering in the name of the Lord, but showed the faithful’s unstoppable love for the sacred Tuman Monastery and its saints,” the Metropolis reports.
