Pechory, Russia, June 18, 2021
The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church officially established the Pskov Caves Theological Seminary yesterday.
The hierarchs, gathered at Danilov Monastery in Moscow under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, considered the petition of His Eminence Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Pskov and Porkhov, accompanied by the report of the chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Church on the opening of the seminary, reports Patriarchia.ru.
The Holy Synod decided to open the seminary and appoint Met. Tikhon as the acting rector of the school.
The Pskov Caves Seminary is an independent continuation of the Pskov branch of the Sretensky Theological Seminary that was opened in 2018. Met. Tikhon was the abbot of Sretensky Monastery and rector of Sretensky Seminary in Moscow before he was sent to serve in Pskov.
The school is the heir to the Pskov Seminary founded in 1723, from which St. Tikhon of Moscow graduated, and the Pechory Seminary. Seminarians will live and study a mile from the historical Pskov Caves Monastery. They will participate in the Pskov Caves monastic life, lead excursions to the monastery, teach Sunday School, and help with the services in the monastery.
