Abbot of Athonite Prophet Elijah Skete reposes in the Lord

Elder Joachim (Karachristos) of Prophet Elijah Skete on Mt. Athos reposed in the Lord at the age of 82 yesterday, June 28, reports Romfea.

The abbot had been facing serious health problems lately.

Prophet Elijah Skete was founded by the great St. Paisius Velichkovsky in 1757.

Sergei Shumilo, director of the International Institute for the Athonite Heritage in Ukraine, notes that Fr. Joachim served for many years an army chaplain, then for 28 years in various churches in Kavala. He later became the abbot of St. Silas Monastery and founded Holy Transfiguration Monastery.

He was initially a brother of Xenophontos Monastery when he moved to Mt. Athos, and in 1992 he was invited to head the new Greek brotherhood of the Prophet Elijah Skete after Schema-Archimandrite (Babich) and the ROCOR brotherhood were kicked off the Holy Mountain by the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

According to Shumilo, the skete was completely restored during Elder Joachim’s abbacy. With the Elder’s help, Shumilo was able to identify the re-discovered relics of Elder Anikita (1783-1837) in 2017.
