A new cooperation agreement between the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations and the Ministry of Education and Science was signed last week providing for the protection of traditional family values in educational literature and curricula.

In particular, the Ministry of Education pledges not to approve any programs or materials that threaten to devalue the institution of the family, motherhood, or fatherhood, which are increasingly challenged in the modern world, the Council of Churches reports.

A memorandum of cooperation between the Council and Ministry has existed since 2000, but this new agreement is deeper and more binding, the Council said.

The agreement also provides for courses on moral education in general secondary education schools, and an education based on moral and spiritual values in preschool institutions.

The Council and Ministry also agreed to cooperate for the licensing of institutions of higher spiritual learning.

OrthoChristian reported yesterday that thousands of Orthodox faithful gathered in Odessa to march in support of traditional family values.
