Fire breaks out on Mt. Athos, monastic cells endangered

A dangerous fire broke out on Mt. Athos this morning in the area of Little St. Anne’s Skete, on the southwest side of the peninsula.

The cells in the area are in danger, reports Vima Orthodoxias.

Firefighters, the Coast Guard, and the police are rushing to the scene of the fire, but their job is made more difficult by the level 7 winds on the Beaufort scale (32-38 mph) blowing in the area.

Many monks, giving their lives in dedication to the Lord and His Mother on holy Mount Athos have been vouchsafed to see the Mother of God herself. In spite of prompt assistance of firemen and brethren from neighboring monasteries (Karakallou, Philotheou, and Great Lavra), according to preliminary information, living quarters and utility structures have burned down.
