His Eminence Archbishop Theophylactos of Jordan of the Jerusalem Patriarchate reposed in the Lord last night at the age of 70.
He served as Archbishop of Jordan and Patriarchal Commissioner to Bethlehem for the last 16 years of his life. He was distinguished and beloved for his service to the Church.
His Eminence suffered an accident recently, and after several operations and intubation, he could no longer endure and reposed in the Lord, reports nyxthimeron.
Given his condition, he recently asked to be released as Patriarchal Commissioner of Bethlehem and was replaced by His Eminence Metropolitan Benedict of Philadelphia by decision of the Holy Synod on October 4.

Met. Theophylactos was born in Kozazni, Greece, in 1951. He received his initial theological education in Xanthi, and in 1972, he moved to Jerusalem and took the position of secretary of the Jerusalem Patriarchal office.
On February 16, 1973, he was tonsured as a monk, and three days later he was ordained a hierodeacon. In 1977, he was ordained a hieromonk and appointed abbot of St. Simeon Monastery, where he served until he entered the Petroupolis Theological Academy. While at the Academy, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite in 1981.
He returned to Jerusalem in 1984 after completing his studies and served at the monastery in Bethlehem. In 1986, he was appointed abbot of Holy Cross Monastery.
In 1989, he was appointed Patriarchal Commissioner to Moscow. In 2001, after his return to Jerusalem, he was elected a member of the Holy Synod and Elder Sacristan. In 2003, he was appointed abbot of St. Theodore Monastery and rector of the Patriarchal Church of Sts. Constantine and Helen.
On November 18, 2005, he was elected Archbishop of Jordan and appointed Patriarchal Commissioner to Bethlehem. He was consecrated as a hierarch on December 4, 2005.
