Kiev, October 13, 2021

The feast of the uncovering of the relics of St. John (Maximovitch) of Shanghai and San Francisco was festively celebrated with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the site of the future church in his honor in Kiev.

Ukrainian clerics celebrated the rite of the blessing of the cross at the future site a month ago, on September 12.

The Divine Liturgy was served yesterday by Bishops Sylvester of Belogorod and and Gideon of Makarov, reports the press service of the Kiev Theological Academy, of which Bp. Sylvester is the rector.

At the end of the service, Bp. Sylvester offered a gift of liturgical utensils for the future church.

Bp. Gideon previously served in the OCA in San Francisco for 10 years, where St. John served in the last years of his life and where his relics are preserved at the ROCOR Cathedral of the Joy of All Who Sorrow. He served at several places, including the OCA’s Monastery of St. John of Shanghai when it was still in Point Reyes Station.

His Grace was in San Francisco for St. John’s main feast day in July this year.
