The Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate met remotely today and resolved to establish a diocese in the Republic of Armenia.

According to the Synod’s resolution, His Eminence Archbishop Leonid of Klin is appointed to the newly established diocese, with the title “of Yerevan and Armenia,” with his cathedra in the capital city of Yerevan.

He will remain the Deputy Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations.

Since 2016, the churches in Armenia had been part of a stavropegial Patriarchal Deanery, directly subordinate to Patriarch Kirill, with Abp. Leonid serving as administrator. Before that, they had been part of various dioceses of the Russian Church.

As of November 2019, there were eight churches with regular services. According to Archpriest Arseny Grigoriantis, the majority of the parishioners are Orthodox Armenians, although the vast majority of Armenians are part of the Armenian Apostolic Church which is part of the non-Chalcedonian communion of churches.

Thea Toula: Thank you for the link and I know you have a good heart and you are Strong Orthodox... But I want to tell you something that I have noticed... The strongest of the Orthodox Christians are the poorest of the people, the people from the countryside that used to be called peasants, people with little formal education...These are the pious people that hold the Church together.... When a pious Orthodox Christian lady like this walks past any Church she will always cross herself, and she does not ask herself is this a Greek Orthodox Church or a Russian Orthodox Church ... She does not ask herself is this Church on the old calendar or the new calendar ... She does not ask herself is this an Eastern Orthodox Church or an Oriental Orthodox Church...

Hopefully this will result in increased ties and friendship between the Russian Orthodox and the Armenian Orthodox People... We have to support the Armenian People.... They are in a difficult situation and are virtually isolated,... They are Orthodox Brothers and we must support them...
