Serbian Church medals have been devalued after being given out to so many undeserving people, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije said in 2019.

Serbian television station Nova recently broadcast audio of the Patriarch, then the Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana, from what it says was a talk with students of the Faculty of Theology about problems facing the Serbian Church and the Kosovo issue.

“The medal means nothing. The medal has devalued so much,” Met. Porfirije said. According to him, “thousands of people” have received Church medals, and often because of monetary contributions.

“Every other mobster in Serbia has gotten a Serbian Orthodox Church medal,” he lamented.

Of course, there are others who have deserved and “honorably received” the award, he added.

Sources within the Serbian Church close to the Patriarch confirmed for OrthoChristian that the voice in the audio is that of Patriarch Porfirije, and added that he was very upset when the Order of St. Sava was given President Aleksandr Vučić.

This is also a big problem in the Greek Orthodox Churches...............the wealthy laity (they don't necessarily come to church) donates astronomical sums of money to the churches and I have to be fair it helps, however they expect awards and privileges from the church that ordinary laity can't have.......for example the sacrament of matrimony performed by a Archbishop or Bishop, having Bishops hearing confessions and so on. So many undeserving people in the Greek Orthodox Churches are bestowed these awards and they take on an air of arrogance and pride towards those ordinary poor laity.
