A fire broke out yesterday at the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra on the second floor of a two-story building, where the iconography workshop is housed.
The blaze began at 1:45 PM, and was extinguished an hour later. The fire had spread to the roof of the building, reports the State Emergency Service.
The preliminary cause was identified as a short circuit of the wiring in the room’s ventilation system, the Ukrainian Church reports.
The room suffered only smoke damage and the failure of the ventilation duct, though a young monk was unfortunately injured while fighting the fire.
Lavra abbot Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod explained that the monks were the first to rush to put out the fire, and the Monk Solomon fell while trying to remove the grating from the room’s windows from the outside. He was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion.
Met. Pavel also especially noted that no icons were damaged, nor was the nearby church.
