In honor of the feast of the great 20th-century Greek Athonite elder St. Porphyrios tomorrow, Ekklisia Online has published a rare video of the saint:

In the video, St. Porphyrios speaks very humbly with his spiritual children, telling them how sinful he is, though he was blessed with the prayers and guidance of his Athonite elders.

“Everyone shouts that I’m a saint. But I feel like I’m the most sinful person in the world,” he says.

“I have always tried to pray and read the hymns of the Church, the Bible, and the lives of our saints, and I hope you do the same. I have tried by the grace of God to approach God, and I hope you do the same. I beg you all to forgive me for making you sad,” the saint says.

When I was on Holy Mount Athos, I heard from my fellow-students, different people and Athonite monks about numerous miracles of St. Porphyrios who then lived at Pendeli Monastery in Athens. I was told about all types of supernatural and wonderful things the holy elder performed by his prayers. And I was seized with “good” curiosity—I wanted to get acquainted with him.

On November 23, 2013, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople accepted the resolution to canonize Elder Porphyrios (Bairaktaris) of Kafsokalivia.
