Pentateuch published in Kumyk language of Northern Caucasus

Photo: ibt.org.ru Photo: ibt.org.ru The 5 books of Moses have been published in the Kumyk language for the first time, thanks to the efforts of the Moscow-based Institute for Bible Translation.

Kumyk is spoken in Dagestan, northeastern Chechnya, and the Mozdok District of North Ossetia. It belongs to the Kipchak group of Turkic languages, and is spoken by about 450-500,000 people, predominantly Muslims, the Institute reports.

The translation was made by a team of Kumyk experts, theologians, and Biblical scholars. It’s published with the approval of the G. Tsadasa Institute of Language, Literature, and Art of the Dagestan Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Institute previously published the New Testament (2007), Proverbs (2008), the Psalter (2016), Job (2018), and 1-4 Kings (2019) in Kumyk.

The publication also includes a dictionary of Biblical terms and hard-to-understand words, the geneaology of the 12 Tribes of Israel, and maps of “The World of Genesis” and “The Way of the Exodus.”

Among its many projects, the Institute for Bible Translation has been publishing Biblical texts in the Abaza language since 2019.
