The hierarchs of three Local Churches with dioceses in Argentina have joined together to protest the display of a piece of “art” that blasphemously disfigures an icon of the Savior.
Metropolitan Santiago of Buenos Aires and All Argentina (Antiochian), Bishop Leonid of Argentina and South America (Russian), and Bishop Kirilo of Buenos Aires and South-Central America (Serbian) met with the director of the Enrique Larreta Museum of Spanish Art in Buenos Aires on Monday to discuss a piece in the Sword and Cross exhibition.
The offending piece, entitled “Animal Christ and Rock-Faced Saints” by Amaya Bouquet, takes a 19th-century Russian icon as its foundation, but replaces the face of Christ with a tuft of fur, reports the Metropolis of Montenegro of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Semi-precious stones are used in place of the faces of the saints around the borders of the icon.
The statement the hierarchs handed to the museum management expressed protest against the display of such objects, which are “a blatant encroachment on the religious sensibilities of believers and a violation of moral and ethical principles accepted throughout the world.”
The bishops also intend to send a letter of protest to the Ministry of Culture.
In November 2020, Met. Santiago and Bp. Kirilo were joined by Bishop John of Caracas of ROCOR and Metropolitan Joseph of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in issuing a strong pro-life message against a then proposed bill to legalize abortion.
