Construction on a new Orthodox church in the Canary Islands is well underway.

On February 16, Archbishop Nestor of Madrid and Lisbon (Moscow Patriarchate) visited the construction site in the coastal town of Costa Adeje on the island of Tenerife—part of the Canary Islands, off the coast of western Africa.

Nestor thus met with the architect, trustees, and representatives from a number of construction companies regarding a new tender for construction, reports the Diocese of Spain and Portugal.

The Archbishop also served a moleben for the successful completion of the construction, which is expected to continue this week.

Abp. Nestor laid the foundation stone for the future Church of the Meeting of the Lord in August 2019. The parish community has existed since 2003, worshiping in temporary chapels.

There are also Romanian and Serbian Orthodox communities in the Canary Islands.
