The upcoming session of the Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church may have to be postponed again.
Initially planned for last November, the Council was postponed to this coming May 26-29 due to the COVID pandemic. Now, it may have to be postponed again due to the sanctions against Russia that would impede travel for many of the Russian Church’s bishops, who serve throughout the world.
“It’s very likely that many bishops won’t be able to come to Moscow due to transport restrictions. So we will monitor the situation, and at the right time, we’ll make a decision on how and when to hold the Bishops’ Council,” Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, the head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations said on air on the Church and the World television program over the weekend, reports RIA-Novosti.
Various options are being considered, Met. Hilarion noted. The Church may decide to hold the Council as planned, or to postpone it, perhaps until the fall, and the possibility of the remote participation of some bishops is being considered.
“We’ll have to weigh all these factors to make the appropriate decision,” His Eminence said.
Among the main topics on the Council agenda is the authenticity of the Ekaterinburg remains, which have been scientifically proven to be the relics of Tsar Nicholas II and his martyred family.
