Holy Zion “Upper Room” Chapel again vandalized, guard threatened with death

Jerusalem, June 9, 2022

Early Monday morning, June 6, 2022, a group of around 50 Israeli radicals of unknown origin broke onto the territory of the Patriarchal chapel on Zion Hill, Jerusalem, reports the Secretariat-General of the Jerusalem Patriarch on the Patriarchate’s website.

The radicals reportedly entered the chapel, desecrated it, and threatened the guard appointed by the Patriarchate, saying, “We know where you live, and we will kill you.”

The Zion Chapel is located on the site of the “upper room”, where the Last Supper and Pentecost took place. Jewish radicals have repeatedly trespassed on the property and intimidated personnel there.

In this instance, the guard managed to call the police, who arrived and intervened to restore order.

The Patriarchate strongly protests these violations against the its sacred property and the safety of its personnel. A complaint was filed to the Jerusalem police by the President of the Finance Committee and Patriarchal Commissioner, His Eminence Metropolitan Isychios of Kapitolias, who demanded that the police do all they can to find the vandals and bring them to justice, for the sake of the peace of the Christians—especially as we approach the celebration of Holy Pentecost next Sunday and the Feast of the Holy Spirit on Monday.
