A church in the west of North Macedonia suffered serious damage at the hands of vandals on Monday.

The perpetrators broke into the Church of St. Achillus of Larissa in Trebište, a dependency of the ancient Bigorsky Monastery, and tried to set a fire, reports 4news.mk.

The break-in occurred at around 9 in the morning. A good deal of damage to the building was found, and police are investigating the attack.

The church was built in 1840, when Bigorsky Monastery was actively acquiring land in Trebište. It features frescoes and icons Dičo Zograf, a master of Byzantine iconography.

The church also houses a rich collection of ecclesiastical books printed in Kiev, Moscow, Belgrade, and Constantinople.
