Following the festive Liturgy celebrated by His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine at the Florovsky Monastery in Kiev, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s Synodal Department for Social and Humanitarian Issues held its “Backpack of Mercy” event today.
The annual event aims at providing assistance to low-income, large, and needy families, and bringing children to school together.
In preparation for the new school year, about 100 children from internally displaced families received backpacks filled with necessary school supplies from His Beatitude, reports the Information-Education Department of the UOC.
Before distributing the supplies, the Metropolitan served a moleben for the blessing of the children at the beginning of the new school year.
The event was held this year with the financial support of Met. Onuphry’s charitable foundation Peace to You.
Several churches in Bucharest also distributed 4,000 loaded backpacks this year, including to 1,000 children from Ukrainian refugee families.
