The Estonian government is very closely monitoring the Estonian Orthodox Church, looking for any statements or actions in favor of the war in Ukraine.

If the Estonian Church, which is part of the Moscow Patriarchate, should make any statements calling for war, the state could cancel the residence permit of His Eminence Metropolitan Evgeny of Tallinn, Interior Minister Lauri Läänemets told err.ee.

“So far, as far as I know, no direct calls or direct action by this Church that justifies war have been identified,” Läänemets said.

The Minister summoned the Metropolitan to a meeting yesterday, though the hierarch isn’t currently in Estonia. The state expects the Metropolitan to distance himself from the Patriarch’s statements on the war and show that the Church in Estonia “doesn’t go along with such actions.”

According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, the state hasn’t yet discussed whether to do something directly with the Estonian Church.
