More than a dozen icons were blessed at the Church of the Surety of Sinners Icon of the Mother of God in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, recently, which will soon be sent to the Donbass.

The 16 icons have a unique origin—they were all painted by locally held prisoners, reports the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Krasnoyarsk Krai.

Among the icons are the Holy Trinity, Christ the Savior, the Mother of God, St. Nicholas, St. George, and St. Matrona.

The icons are a donation for the Krasnoyarsk Krais’ project to restore churches that have been damaged or destroyed in Donbass since the war in Ukraine began in February. The prisoners-iconographers hope their works will help raise people’s morale in this difficult time and provide them with much-needed support.

The Russian Orthodox Church has also received applications to restore at least 152 churches, mostly located on the territory of the Severodonetsk, Donetsk, and Gorlovka Dioceses.
