The sale of relics is immoral both for the seller and the buyer, a top Russian Church representative said in response to a new page on Russian social media.

Earlier, a page appeared on the Russian social media site Vkontakte claiming to sell relics of saints from around the world, with documents confirming their authenticity.

Such sites should be included in a list of resources that have nothing to do with the Russian Church, suggests Vakhtang Kipshidze, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Synodal Department for Relations with the Society and Media, reports RIA-Novosti.

“We categorically condemn the practice of selling relics… The sale of relics is completely immoral, and it makes no difference here if you’re the buyer or seller,” Kipshidze said.

But I wonder if the purchase of a relic in order to return it to the church is immoral, assuming the relic is genuine? In that case, wouldn't it be like paying a ransom?
