Mt. Athos, November 28, 2022
A beloved Athonite ascetic, Elder Isidoros the Blind of Philotheou, reposed in the Lord yesterday at the age of 87, reports Romfea.
He was known for his clairvoyance and the words of spiritual consolation with which he comforted thousands of faithful Orthodox Christians. There are also hundreds of testimonies about miracles worked by the blind elder.
He was also known as a spiritual child of Elder Ephraim of Philotheou and Arizona, the great missionary to America, who reposed in December 2019.
Elder Isidoros was born in Patras with impaired vision. An eye surgery at the age of 15 left him completely blind.
He was tonsured as a monk by Elder Ephraim at Philotheou at the age of 40. Before he became a monk, the Most Holy Theotokos heard his request and restored his eyesight, though he later asked her to take it away again, believing the infirmity helped him spiritually.
He was among the Philotheou fathers who went to repopulate Xeropotamou Monastery in 1980. He later visited Elder Ephraim several times in Arizona to receive his blessing.
He had a special love for the Theotokos, whom he called “Mama.”
May Elder Isidoros’ memory be eternal!
