Mt. Athos: Elder Daniel of Katounakia reposes in the Lord

Mt. Athos, October 21, 2022

Elder Daniel of Katounakia, one of the most revered Athonite elders of our times, reposed in the Lord early this morning.

The elder was the spiritual grandchild and namesake of St. Daniel of Katounakia, who was canonized by the Patriarchate of Constantinople in March 2020.

Elder Daniel was born in Paleochori, Kavala, Greece, in 1931. He joined the Athonite Brotherhood of St. Daniel, in the Skete of Little St. Anne in 1949, and was tonsured as a monk in 1952. He studied Byzantine chant under the brotherhood’s elders and often chanted at the great feasts all over Mt. Athos and beyond. He was also an accomplished iconographer and doctor.

May his memory be eternal!
