His Eminence Metropolitan Jonathan of Tulchin and Bratslav, a hierarch of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church who has been subjected to searches and serious accusations by the Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) lately, underwent an emergency open-heart surgery today.

During his medical examination yesterday, cardiologists found “extensive changes in the coronary vessels of the heart, dangerous to the health and life of the archpastor,” writes the diocesan press service.

Thus, His Eminence underwent surgery this morning to replace the affected vessels.

The diocese writes:

Metropolitan Jonathan asks all brothers and sisters in Christ to pray fervently to the Lord God, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the holy healers and wonderworkers to help the attending physicians.

Metropolitan Jonathan, entrusting his life and health to the good and omnipotent will and mercy of the Lord God Almighty, and asking the Heavenly Father for love and forgiveness, gives his archpastoral blessing to the Vicar Bishop Sergei, the priests, monks and all the beloved Orthodox flock of Tulchin, to all lovers and performers of his spiritual and musical chants living in other countries, with a wish for the merciful and soul-saving peace of God!

The SBU has searched the home and diocesan administration of Met. Jonathan, accusing him of harboring pro-Russian views. His Eminence denies the accusations, which he believes are a fabricated attack against the whole of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Last month, the clergy of his diocese declared their full confidence in their hierarch.

May God grant Met. Jonathan a full and speedy recovery!
