On its patronal feast day, in the year of the 400th anniversary of its foundation, the remains of the notable 19th-cntury Abbess Athanasia were transferred back to the Iveron Convent in the Siberian city of Yeniseysk.
The joyous occasion took place on February 25, the feast of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, when the remains of Mother Athanasia, which had been discovered during archaeological work in 2017, were returned to the holy habitation from the Yenisei Museum, reports the Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism.
Under Abbess Athanasia (1821-1890), the monastery was revived after a terrible fire in 1869, and the Iveron Church was built, after which the monastery became known as the Iveron Convent.
Abbess Athanasia was distinguished by piety, and the monastery experienced a true rebirth thanks to her labors.
The monastery ensemble was badly damaged in the Soviet years. Due to endless rebuilding and destruction, the abbess’ grave was lost, only to be rediscovered during the course of large-scale archaeological research in 2017. In November 2022, the remains were transferred to the local museum.
Now they have returned to their rightful place at the monastery and have been placed in a special reliquary.
