Hundreds of Orthodox faithful from the Chicago area came together on Sunday evening to celebrate Vespers for the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

The service was held at Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and celebrated by Archbishop Daniel of Chicago (Orthodox Church in America), Metropolitan Nicolae of America and Canada (Romanian), Archbishop Peter of Chicago (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia), Bishop Longin of New Gračanica and Midwestern America, and Bishop Sava, retired hierarch of Slavonia (Serbian), reports the OCA Diocese of Chicago.

Abp. Daniel was invited to give the homily at the service, and he spoke about the unity of the Church.

The following day, Abp. Daniel also led a retreat for the Orthodox Christian Clergy Association of Greater Chicago at the Serbian cathedral, offering a series of talks on the priesthood.

The OCA diocese reports:

The Archbishop taught how Christ’s ministry was the institution of the priesthood and how the priest is to be an icon of Christ. “In the icon of the Mystical Supper, we see St. John the Theologian leaning his head on our Savior, and that moment of his leaning his head to the heart of our Lord, it points to the spiritual origin of the priesthood. What are we called to as priests? To lean on the Lord and to rest on Him.”

To Gary and Jason, reflecting on your messages, the problem we are confronted with ecumenism is a very big issue. In the Orthodox Churches in the U.S. where the Synodikon of Orthodoxy has been entirely sung (not just a reduced version or a short extract of it) faithful could understand that in terms of the anathemas, all false "modern" orthodoxies are mentioned in the Synodikon (ecumenism, new calendar, american sergianism, etc...). So it is little wonder why the modernist priests and hierarchs would not want to proclaim condemnations in which sadly they play a large part. This subject is very sensitive and generally tabou in the modernist Orthodox Churches in the U.S. (OCA, GOARCH, Serbian, Russian, Romanian, ...) as they are generally official and active members of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and of the U.S. National Council of Churches (NCC). This current situation of the theology with ecumenism is very pernicious because it calls for a relativization of canon law in the name of an undesirable union. To make short a long story, the issue of respecting the doctrine and the canons of the One unique Orthodox Church is a real issue. Today it is not the general feeling that the modernist Hierarchs and Priests fully encourage their faithful to study the subject of the doctrine and dogmas. As a result, we need to recognize humbly that it is quite true that most people in the modernist Orthodox Churches are not interested or aware of the structure of their faith and beliefs - where does dogma come from and what are its implications. It is difficult to think that such events as the one which took place last Sunday in the Chicago area can bring and offer a greater awareness of the current situation of the theology with ecumenism and being strong on the doctrine of the Orthodox Church. Are the faithful of the modernist Orthodox Churches going to be ready, after the celebration of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, to study for example the contents for example of the Pan-Orthodox Councils which took place in1583, in 1587, in 1593, and in 1848? The anathemas which were thrown from these Councils on the reform of the Orthodox Ecclesiastical calendar are still valid as the 1983 anathema to Ecumenism still is, to even not mention each single decision brought by the Canon of the Apostles (example #65) and the different Ecumenical Councils of our Holy Fathers (example: the canons 32, 33, and 37 of the Council of Laodicea). The true issue is still real: These anathemas are for Eternity! Not just for 10 years of 100 years. The modernist Orthodox Churches need to stop their pernicious behavior with the relativization of canon law. Let's stop the World and its interests prevail over the Holy Orthodox doctrine. May St. Philaret of New York pray unto God for us sinners!

To Gary, If you could kindly point out where in the Greek Orthodox Church, there is a pro homosexuality agenda, that would be much appreciated. And no I don't mean comments from irrelevant academics. As for the Greek Orthodox Church not being part of this liturgy, Cypriot, Greek, Alexandrian, Constantinopolitan and Jerusalem faithful unite in liturgy every week in GOARCH, which dwarfs all other denominations combined in America and this recent event in Chicago.

Since the Greeks were not part of it, maybe this is an indication that the Bishops are standing firm together against the pro homosexuality agenda of Bartholomew and his cronies. Also against giving communion to non Orthodox spouses. Maybe? Let's continue to pray for our Patriarchs and Bishops!

We remember that the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (ROCA) Council of Bishops in August 1983 in the person of its Metropolitan Philaret of New York (1903-1985), noting the extent of the Ecumenist contagion, issued an Anathema to Ecumenism in the straight line of the Holy Fathers, condemning anyone who participated in this heresy. When the Church pronounces anathema on a certain heresy, we must not forget that it is for eternity. Anathema to Ecumenism (1983) "To those who attack the Church of Christ by teaching that Christ’s Church is divided into so-called “branches” which differ in doctrine and way of life, or that the Church does not exist visibly, but will be formed in the future when all “branches” or sects or denominations, and even religions will be united into one body; and who do not distinguish the priesthood and mysteries of the Church from those of the heretics, but say that the baptism and eucharist of heretics is effectual for salvation; therefore, to those who knowingly have communion with these aforementioned heretics or who advocate, disseminate, or defend their new heresy of Ecumenism under the pretext of brotherly love or the supposed unification of separated Christians, Anathema! --- Note: The relics of Metropolitan Philaret of New York were found to be completely incorrupt in 1998.

The Orthodox Brother Alexander: Thank You for speaking the truth. The women should also be segregated and standing in their own section like it was before. Here is some more TRUTH: At the time of JESUS, ALL WOMEN in the temple had their heads covered and they were ALL segregated in their own section! JESUS NEVER objected to this and therefore HE AGREED with it! In fact women were covered EVERYWHERE they went, not only their heads but their ENTIRE body, other than their face. Jesus also never objected to this and therefore HE agreed with it! Look at the Icons of the Panagia, and Her head is always covered and Her entire body is covered, except Her face. I love all of my Orthodox Brothers and Sisters, and I beg you to return to our conservative roots. I beg you to reject no good liberalism. Take a look at the decadent Western countries that have been infested with no good liberalism. God Almighty is this what you want for our people? This is why I love and support my Russian Orthodox Brothers. They speak the truth, and they have maintained the Conservative Orthodox Beliefs and Traditions that have been handed down to us from the time of Jesus. So wake up, straighten up, and be a Strong Orthodox Christian. Glory be to our True God Jesus Christ. Just my humble opinion.

Bob; What exactly did Jesus say concerning the thousand year traditions of the Russian and Greek orthodox churches? What do you as a member of the OCA consider dispensable in the orthodox religion?
Bob3/7/2023 8:01 pm
Get over yourself, Andrew. Look to what's in the heart. Jesus railed against this kind of legalism.

Church with pews? Not orthodox. Women without hair cover.
