San Bonifacio, Italy, March 23, 2023
Yesterday, OrthoChristian reported about an Orthodox parish in Sweden that is fighting to save its church from demolition by the local authorities. The church is gathering signatures to appeal the decision. THE COLLECTION OF SIGNATURES ENDS TODAY—PLEASE SIGN TODAY.
We were then informed about a similar situation with a Romanian Orthodox parish in northern Italy.
The parish community of St. Boniface was organized by Fr. Daniel Stîngă, with its first Liturgy celebrated on March 1, 2015. After two years, they began holding services in the chapel in a former hospital in the town of San Bonifacio, which was renovated with the parish’s own resources, reports the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy.
The community is very active, with services almost every day, religious and catechetical classes, and various philanthropic projects.
However, the parish was recently informed that the city council intends to demolish the hospital and the chapel. Thus, the community is now pressed to find space and funds to build its own church.
“There's a very strict timeframe before we're kicked out of our church. Please help us keep alive this growing center of Orthodoxy in the west by donating or sharing this campaign. The names of those that donate will be written in our diptychs to be read during the Divine Liturgy. May God help us all,” reads the GoFundMe campaign launched a few weeks ago.
The campaign has currently raised $3,447 (3,160 euros) towards its goal of $218,140 (200,000 euros).
