After decades of Soviet rule, the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra—the holiest site in all of Ukraine—was left in a state of ruin.
Once monks were allowed to return to the monastery in 1988, the Church set about completely restoring the holy site. Over the years, all the churches have been fully restored and both the monastic and theological-academic life are again flourishing at the Lavra.
The monastery was restored almost entirely by the efforts and means of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the faithful people of Ukraine, although the state continues to own it legally.
A new video offers striking comparisons of what the Lavra looked like before the Church began to revive it and what it looks like today:
Ukrainian Minister of Culture Alexander Tkachenko, an open opponent of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, even admitted this week that other religious confessions in Ukraine couldn’t handle the upkeep of the monastery.
