The standoff between the Orthodox faithful of Ukraine and the authorities continued at the Kiev Caves Lavra throughout Bright Week.

The police sealed up certain buildings of the Lavra, detained and charged people for defending the monastery and filming the illegal seizure of its buildings. Yesterday, someone even called in a fake bomb threat at the Lavra.

And today, police closed the entrance to the Lavra’s Church of the Life-Giving Spring, preventing the faithful from fully participating in the Divine Liturgy for its patronal feast, reports the Information-Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The faithful who arrived after the police closed the entrance were forced to pray behind the wall around the territory of the church. The priests had to come out into the courtyard to confess and commune the people through the bars of the church gate.

The Lavra is a spiritual phenomenon that didn’t appear by human will, but by the God’s will; and will exist according to its spiritual laws in spite of all worldly vanity.

The whole world has now seen how men, women, and children, pray with tears on bended knee while others mock them, attempt to drown them out with nationalistic slogans, and worse.

We do not choose the time we are to be born in this world, but we do choose how we will spend our time in the world. We choose how to leave this world—either holding on to Christ’s hand, or hooked onto the devil’s tail.

According to a letter sent to the Kiev Caves Lavra by the leadership of the state-owned Kiev Caves Lavra National Reserve, the brotherhood and faithful are now also cut off from both the Near and Far Caves and three other churches. The Caves are where the relics of hundreds of saints are located.
