On Sunday, June 11, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated its first Divine Liturgy in the west African country of Togo.

The Liturgy was celebrated by Fr. Boris Pitasso, a priest of the ROC’s African Exarchate, reports Patriarchia.ru.

Fr. Boris was ordained in Moscow on Holy Thursday after undergoing liturgical practice in various churches and monasteries.

According to Orthodox World and Orthodox Christian Initiative for Africa, there are four churches of the Patriarchate of Alexandria’s Diocese of Nigeria in Togo. The Church in Togo was founded in 2005.

In 2010, the Orthodox Church in Togo created the ASSEDD-TOGO Association, dedicated to those suffering from poverty as a result of the several economic and political crises that the county has faced already in the 21st century.

The Church also has a low-cost medical center in the capital city of Lomé, a center for psychological and psychiatric healthcare, an agro-pastoral project, and many other projects.
