Piatra Neamț, Neamț County, Romania, June 27, 2023
A number of religious and cultural events were held over the weekend in Piatra Neamț, Romania, in honor of the city’s patron, St. John the Baptist.
In particular, thousands of Orthodox faithful participated in a procession in honor of the Nativity of the great prophet, celebrated on June 24 on the new calendar, reports the Basilica News Agency.
The celebration began on Friday evening with Great Vespers celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Teofan of Moldavia and Bucovina and several other hierarchs.
In his homily following the service, Met. Teofan emphasized that by participating in the procession, people have the blessed opportunity to confess their faith in God. Thousands of Orthodox faithful, including hierarchs, clergy, monastics, and laity, then prayerfully processed through the city.
The Nativity of St. John the Baptist Church in the center of the city, founded by St. Stephan the Great, is also celebrating its 525th anniversary this year. In honor of the occasion, the relics of St. Constantin Brâncoveanu from the St. Mahram Church in Iași were brought to the Neamț church.
Last week, more than 20,000 Romanian Orthodox faithful processed in honor of St. John the New of Suceava.
