Several prisoners from Aiud Prison in Alba County in central Romania were taken on a pilgrimage to a local monastery last week.

The visit to Râmeţ Monastery was meant to “form a correct attitude towards the rules of social cohabitation, contributing to the personal development of the participants towards an easy reintegration into the community,” writes the Archdiocese of Alba Iluia.

The trip for 14 prisoners was organized by the prison’s social reintegration department.

The men first attended the Divine Liturgy at the monastery, followed by the Sacrament of Holy Unction. Fr. Ioanichie, who serves at the monastery’s Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, spoke to the prisoners about the love of God and the love of neighbor, explaining to them the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The group also visited the monastery’s historical monument church. Nun Dionisia spoke about the history of the monastery and about Fr. Dometie (Manolache), one of the great elders of the 20th century, who was proposed for canonization in September 2021.

Earlier this month, the Georgian Church opened an exhibition of icons and other sacred works made by convicts.
